At the core of this installation is the belief that energy is finite, constant, and ever-moving—never created or destroyed, only transferred. This universal law of energy becomes a metaphor for human interconnection: we exist within a shared field of invisible energy, constantly affecting and being affected by one another’s energy. Like the room that has finite space within, the energy that connects is finite.
The Energy Between transforms this invisible energy connections into a tangible, physical experience. The room is filled with hundreds of colorful yarn threads stretching from wall to wall, floor to ceiling, forming an intricate web of interconnection. Each thread represents energy that flows between people—fluid, shifting, alive and interconnected.
Upon entering the space, viewers are invited to wear a specially designed life vest connected to the threads. A life vest is used to symbolically to represent the ‘life’ energy that connects us to each other. The life vest implies that this energy that connects us and binds us to each other can ‘save’ us. The energy between can save us.
As they move through the room, the threads respond: distances shift, tensions change, and the entire network reconfigures in real time. Each step alters the spatial relationships of the yarn, revealing the delicate and dynamic nature of energy exchange. This evolving environment embodies the interconnectedness of all things. No movement is isolated; every movement changes the spatial relationships in the room. Due to the interconnectedness of us all, a move in any direction shifts the energy of the whole space.
Readings of paragraphs of psychological studies on the importance of relationships to psychological and physical health will be interspersed with Hindu texts describing the vital life force energy, prana, that interconnects all living things. The paragraphs from psychological research will represent the scientific evidence and will alternate with ancient religious and spiritual texts.
The dismantling of the installation will be an integral part of the experience as the wearer of the vest will use scissors to cut each piece of yarn connected to the vest until they are standing alone, isolated, with a vest that is not connected to anything. The soundscape during this part of the installation piece will psychological texts about the impact of loneliness and isolation.
The installation invites participants to reflect on their role within the collective energy of the world—and how even the smallest actions ripple through the larger web. By making the intangible visible through the colored yarn and how they shift as the viewer moves, The Energy Between, becomes a meditation on presence, interdependence, and the unseen threads that bind us all.
