This installation would use the structure of the space within a space to control participant interaction with the installation. The participant would enter into a space that has been roped with tape and cones to force the participant to approach in one manner only. The tape and cones would be set up in a way that the participant would have a choice to highlight that the participant would, despite technically having a choice, walk to the installation in the prescribed manner. The lights would be left a floor lamp with a foot button would be pointed at the end of the path into the room within a room. The participant in an effort to light up the installation would step on the light. It would not work. Inside the room within a room would be a single table that on one end would have a rat maze with a button at the end of the maze for the rat to press and at the other end of the table a game console with buttons. .The installation would address the degree to which we are all participants in society programmed by objects to operate within a maze and to perform certain actions by the objects in our surroundings. The installation responds to the concept of “dependent participant” introduced in Dependent Participation-Bruce Nauman’s Environments.
