A Room Within A Room
Final Project
In this installation, a chandelier, traditionally a sign of opulence, is hanging within a makeshift plywood room which is itself within a dilapidated, crumbling room. The juxtaposition of a chandelier within a makeshift plywood room asks the viewer to consider symbols of opulence and grandeur and their meaning. The chandelier at the center of the plywood room uses humble utilitarian materials such as, cardboard boxes, Saran wrap, rope, tape, and a single light bulb. The materials when first seen in the midst of the chipped painted floor appear to be in harmony with their surroundings. Materials found in kitchens, warehouses and worksites that speak to the tools of workers. However, by the end of the installation, the artist has constructed a chandelier, historically only seen in rooms of opulence in home of grandeur from these traditional tools of the working class. The installation speaks to economic disparity and questions the construct of economic classes and symbols. It asks where does luxury reside? Can it reside independently of its surroundings? Can it be constructed wherever the mind exists?
